Background

The University of Calgary Department of Family Medicine has been running sustainable quality improvement projects at some of their teaching clinics for a number of years and teaching Planetary Health and the principles of sustainable healthcare to citizens, co-workers, and students.

In the Beltline of Calgary in 2023 a collaborative of businesses, healthcare, education, and public health, anchored in Indigenous health, was formed to determine what activities we could do as a collaborative to improve the health of our community members, addressing our carbon and planetary footprint and how well prepared we are for the impacts of a changing climate, such as wildfire smoke and heat extremes. Out of this project we developed our Earth to Action team and this implementation science research study (REB25-0775).

We hope to learn from community members and healthcare providers all they ways they are experiencing the health effects of climate change and adapt the educational tools and supports so that they can champion a healthy planet.

If your clinic would like more information about the project or if you would like to sign up please contact us.

This study is open to all healthcare providers in community-based clinics: medical office assistants, physicians, licenced practical nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants. It is designed to sign up as many members of the team within a clinic as possible – all are welcome!
